• If a battery shows evidence of leakage, spillage or damage don <br /> proper PRE like nitrile gloves and contain in a closed container that is <br /> compatible with contents of battery. <br /> • Sort battery by type. Alkaline, nickel cadmium and lithium ion shall <br /> be stored in separate containers. Lithium ion batteries shall be taped <br /> to prevent explosive situation. If unsure how to sort batteries, please <br /> consult SSI Environmental Specialist or EH & S Director. <br /> Samos shall be stored in a way that will prevent release to the environment. That <br /> means the container is closed and sealed at all times unless placing lamps in the <br /> container. <br /> • Fluorescent tubes & bulbs, high intensity discharge (HID), metal <br /> halide, sodium, and neon bulbs contain mercury vapor that can be <br /> released into the environment when broken. Mercury is a toxic metal <br /> that can cause nerve damage and birth defects <br /> • Broken lamps are to be cleaned up immediately and contents stored <br /> in a compatible, closed container. DO NOT USE A VACUUM TO CLEAN <br /> UP BROKEN BULBS. IT MAY SPREAD THE MERCURY POWDER OR <br /> VAPOR. Glass fines and powder should be cleaned up with a damp <br /> paper towel or tape. All material used to clean and broken lamp shall <br /> be placed in a sealable plastic bag and stored in a container that not <br /> allow release to the environment. Notify Environmental Specialist of <br /> EH &S Director of any broken lamps. <br /> MercuEy containing equipment like switches/thermostats are stored as to <br /> prevent release to the environment. <br /> • Any mercury switch, thermostat, pressure/vacuum gauge shall be <br /> placed in a sealable plastic bag then placed in a container that is <br /> packaged as to prevent breakage during storage or transportation. <br /> • ANY RELEASE OF MERCURY IS NOT TO BE CLEANED BY ANY SSI <br /> EMPLOYEE. DENY ACCESS TO CONTAMINATED AREA, CALL <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST OF EH &S DIRECTOR IMMEDIATLEY <br />
