• Containers must always be closed during storage, except when waste is added or
removed. Additionally, containers must not be handled, opened,or stored in a mannerthat
may cause leak.
• Containers holding ignitable or reactive wastes must maintain a buffer zone, i.e., must be
located at least 50 ft (15 m)from the facility property line.
• Maintain containers and tanks in good condition (no severe rusting, apparent structural
defects or deterioration) and free of leaks.
Additional temporary storage options are provided in Table 1. The onsite waste accumulation time
limits are as follows:
• On-site storage of used oil shall not exceed one year for generators.
• LQG — may accumulate hazardous waste onsite for 90-days or less
• SQG — may accumulate hazardous waste onsite for 180 days or less; up to 270 days if
transporting for offsite treatment, storage, or disposal over 200-mile distance. SQGs are
allowed to accumulate only 6000 kg or less of hazardous waste at any time.
• CESQG — hazardous waste storage time limit not applicable
WASTE DISPOSAL
Procedures for disposal options differ for different types of wastes. Depending on the type waste,
off-site disposal options can include one or more of the following:
• Recycling
• Reprocessing/Refining
• Landfarming/Bioremediation
• Open Pit Burning
• Incineration
• Landfilling
The final disposal option will be selected based on the following factors:
• Whether the waste is solid or liquid
• Whether the waste is oily or non-oily
• Whether the waste is hazardous or non-hazardous
• Quantity of waste
• Capacity of treatment and disposal options
• Adequacy of temporary storage
• Cost and time requirements of treatment and disposal
• Frequency of handling
The site will ensure waste treatment or disposal at one of the following:
• Permitted or interim status hazardous waste TSDF
• State hazardous waste facility
• State permitted, licensed, or registered, solid waste disposal facility
• State MSWLF
• Recycling facility
5
