Kennedy,Jenl(s Consultants
Section 2: Project Approach
This Work Plan includes a methodology for assessment of the flux of water and of constituents
of concern. Soil and crop sampling will provide a direct measure of assimilation in the upper
5 feet of soil. Soil water balance measurements in the upper 5 feet will provide information
about soil water movement, storage, and adequacy for optimum crop growth. This approach for
monitoring the amount of soil moisture and percolating water is derived from the agricultural
industry where ongoing monitoring of crops and soil moisture is vital for the management of
irrigation to maximize crop yield.
The direct soil, soil moisture, and crop sampling approach will be used to evaluate the
constituent uptake and assimilative capacity of various crops within the land application area. In
addition, this Work Plan proposes deeper soil sampling to provide additional data regarding
a) assimilation of process water constituents within the vadose zone and b) the ability of the
irrigation management strategy to decrease downward flux below the root zone.
The Work Plan will be implemented by establishing three test plots to be used for intensive
measurements of soil and crop processes. The study will be conducted for the 2008 and 2009
growing seasons. Results of the 2008 growing season will be used to develop initial design
criteria for the phase 3 process water treatment design. Results of the 2009 growing season will
be used to refine the phase 3 design criteria.
Crop Uptake and Assimilative Capacity Work Plan, Page 3
Woodbridge Winery, Acampo, California
