•
•
3. The Engineer crushes the glass ampule in the designated crushing -well built into the indicator.
4. The Engineer holds the biological indicator by the cap and taps the bottom of the vial on countertop
until growth media wets the spore strip at the bottom of the vial.
5. The Engineer places the biological indicator in the 3MTm AttestTm Auto -Reader well.
a. Do not remove the biological indicator once it is placed in the well. Otherwise, the test will be
invalid.
6. Close the cover and wait for results at least 3 hours.
G. How to Read the Results
1. The Engineer (or designee) reads the results after 3 hours of incubation.
2. Negative Results (green light -): Indicates an acceptable sterilization process.
a. The Control Tube will always be Red (positive), and the sterilized tube should always be Green
(negative).
3. Positive results (red light +): Indicates an unacceptable sterilization process.
a. Control tube will be Red (positive), and the sterilized tube will be Red (positive).
b. Control tube will be Green (negative), and the sterilized tube will be Red (positive) or Green
(negative).
4. In the event of a positive test result, retest the and do not use the for processing loads until three
consecutive indicator results are negative.
5. After three consecutive negative indicator results, the Engineering Department will schedule
repairs either internal or through r
a. This load and all untreated infectious waste will be placed into Stericycle Tubs for off-site
waste treatment until the is operational again.
b. Once repairs have been completed, retest the and do not place back into service until three
consecutive negative indicator results have been achieved.
6. After incubation, if the control tube is also green, the Environmental Services Department will
contact the manufacturer to report the results, and will order a new batch of biological indicators.
7. All positive test results must be reported immediately to the Chief Engineer, EH&S Manager,
Facility Services Director, and the Environmental Services Manager.
H. Recording the Results
1. The Record Log Book is located in the Engineering Office, and the 3MTm AttestTM Auto -Reader is
located in the Laboratory.
2. Record the test results in the Record Log Book.
3. Record the lot number and the expiration date of the biological indicator tube and control tube into
the log book.
4. After recording the result, place the tube into a red sharps container.
Sani-Pak Spore Testing Policy
MEC Approved TED xx/xx/xx Page 3 of 3
