SAFETY MANAGEMENT OGRAM POLICY/PROCEDURE MOUAL <br />TITLE: HAZARDOUS WASTE CONTINGENCY PLAN <br />PAGE 2 OF 14 <br />Environmental Services staff are required to have Department Specific <br />Hazard <br />Communication and Hazardous Materials training prior to being involved <br />in "first response" activities at the awareness level. This training will <br />include an overview of the chemicals used throughout the facilities. <br />Departments with these responsibilities will be prepared to respond with current <br />procedures, incidental spill sheets, and equipped to respond with appropriate <br />equipment and materials. <br />Procedures will outline responsibilities to be assumed by others in the Medical <br />Center and will specifically address the role of external agencies contracted to <br />address emergency spills. <br />Departments may choose to train staff at the "first response" awareness level. <br />PROCEDURE <br />Incidental (small) hazardous spills localized to a specific department/ area. <br />PRODUCT <br />INCIDENTAL SPILL VOLUME <br />Acids <br />Less than 1/2 cup <br />Bases & Caustics <br />Less than 1/2 gallon <br />Bleach <br />Less than 1/2 gallon <br />Flammable Liquids <br />Less than 1/2 gallon <br />Formaldehyde <br />Less than 3/4 cup <br />Gluteraldehyde <br />Less than 1/2 gallon <br />EVS will maintain the appropriate hazardous materials emergency spill <br />kits and train their employees in the proper use of these kits for incidental <br />spill in all departments. Departments may also choose to train their staff <br />to respond to incidental spills. For "first response" at the awareness level <br />emergency spill response within the Safety Management manual must be <br />reviewed prior to an incident and utilized to assist in incidental spill <br />cleanup. <br />For a spill, the manager/supervisor or involved employee(s) are to <br />immediately follow notification procedures and begin the process by <br />calling the service line at 3939. <br />The operator will continue the notification procedures once <br />information has been obtained on the hazardous material <br />involved, location, and amount. <br />Fresno Revision dates: 09/12/96, 6/25/98, 3/30/00, 8/l/01,Stockton revision date 07/22/02, <br />09/19/02, 3/20/03,02/12/04, 07/06 <br />
