0 • <br />Sutter Gould Medical Foundation <br />Environmental Services Department <br />Bio -hazard Waste Removal <br />1. PURPOSE <br />The purpose of this policy is to ensure that employees of the Environmental Services <br />Department pickup, transport and remove bio -hazard Waste in a manner consistent <br />with Gould Medical Foundation, city and state requirements. This policy is also <br />designed to minimize the risk of injury. <br />1. TYPES OF WASTE <br />A. Autoclave Waste: Any bag which is treated in a sterilizer for at least 30 minutes at <br />121 degrees c. and 20 PSI. The only approved bags are the Baxter red or clear <br />autoclave bags. <br />B. Bio -hazard Waste: A bag which has the universal bio -hazard Symbol and the word <br />"bio -hazard" on the bag. <br />C. Sharps Container: A rigid, hard plastic container, purple and white in color, with <br />a lock down lid and a bio -hazard warning label on it. <br />D. Mixed Waste: Waste consisting of at least two types of waste; <br />1. Bio -hazard and chemical waste will be treated as chemical waste. <br />2. Radioactive and bio -hazard waste will be treated as radioactive waste. <br />3. Radioactive, chemical and bio -hazard waste will be treated as radioactive waste. <br />3. ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENT <br />Prior to transporting or removing any bio -hazard waste, the Environmental Services <br />staff will meet the following administrative requirements: <br />A. Training, which will address the following: <br />1. The California Medical Waste Management Act and this policy. <br />2. Hazard Communication. <br />3. Packaging procedures. <br />4. Transport procedures. <br />5. Emergency procedures. <br />B. Protective Clothing <br />In accordance with the OSHA Blood borne Pathogen Policy, Housekeeping must <br />provide each staff member dedicated to bio -hazard waste transport and disposal <br />duties adequate personal protective equipment to reduce potential occupational <br />exposure to Blood borne pathogens. The protective clothing must fit each <br />individual employee and at a minimum the following should be available: <br />1. Gloves. <br />
