Medical Surveillance <br />All housekeeping staff members designated to pick up bio -hazard waste are <br />recommended to initiate the following medical surveillance procedures: <br />1. Hepatitis B Vaccination. <br />2. Blood sera drawn and stored. <br />3. Other vaccinations, if necessary. <br />4. PACKAGING REQUIREMENTS <br />All bio -hazard waste must be properly packaged by the generator prior to pickup by <br />Housekeeping. The housekeeping staff will report any bio -hazard waste not properly <br />packaged to their manager who will contact the generating department and the safety <br />committee. <br />A. Bio -hazard Bag <br />Bio -hazard waste must be stored in a secondary container. The generator must not <br />dispose of sharps in a bio -hazard bag. <br />B. Autoclave Bag <br />At the current time there is no autoclaving being done at Sutter Gould Medical <br />Foundation. <br />C. Sharps Container <br />A sharps container must be filled no more that 3/4 full. The top must be locked <br />down in place. Check to ensure proper closure. <br />D. Mixed Waste <br />All mixed waste shall be picked up by outside contractors. Generating <br />departments will notify the contractor for pickup. <br />The Housekeeping staff will transport only properly packaged waste to the holding <br />area. <br />A. At no time will the Housekeeping staff transport bio -hazard waste along with <br />regular waste or soiled linen. <br />B. The Housekeeping staff transport bio -hazard waste with a trash cart <br />to the holding area. <br />C. The bio -hazard waste will be placed in barrels at the Bio Hazardous Waste Storage <br />Center located near the Apple -A -Day Cafe. This area is to be locked at all time. <br />
