Delta Health Care
Safety Manual
contact with blood or body fluids .
b . Goggles are indicated when the employee 's eyes
may be splattered with droplets of blood or
body fluids . Prescription eyeglasses do
provide some protection and are adequate for
certain patient care activities ; however,
those activities involving aerosols
necessitate added protection .
4) Sharps (Needles, Razor Blades, Scalpels , Etc. )
a. Special precautions should be taken to prevent
injuries caused by needles, scalpels, and
other sharp instruments or devices during
procedures:
1 . NEVER RECAP A NEEDLE. Recapping of
needles is a major cause of injury.
After use , needles and syringes should be
discarded directly into the red plastic
puncture-proof containers provided .
2 . NEVER PUT A NEEDLE DOWN - DISPOSE OF IT
PROPERLY. Needles left on exam tables or
counters may injure staff, patients or
visitors . After use , needles must always
be put into the plastic puncture proof
containers .
3 . NEVER PUT NEEDLE OR OTHER SHARP
INSTRUMENTS IN TRASH CANS . Housekeeping
personnel may be injured by needles
inappropriately placed in trash cans .
4. NEVER LEAVE NEEDLES OR OTHER SHARP
INSTRUMENTS ON DISPOSABLE TRAYS . ALWAYS
TARE THESE TO THE RED PLASTIC CONTAINER.
Persons disposing of trays after
procedures may be injured by needles .
Also , disposable trays are put into trash
cans, and if needles are present, pose a
risk to housekeeping personnel .
5 . NEVER PUSH A NEEDLE INTO THE RED PLASTIC
NEEDLE DISPOSAL BOX WITH YOUR HAND. IF
THE NEEDLE DOES NOT GO INTO THE OPENING
EASILY, USE A LARGE SYRINGE TO PUSH IT
IN.
6 . NEVER TRY TO REMOVE A NEEDLE, SYRINGE OR
ANY OBJECT FROM A RED PLASTIC NEEDLE BOX.
Page 8
June 1991
