GLOVES: ordinary gloves offer no <br /> protection against needlestick injuries <br /> or scalpel cuts. <br /> Employees and employers should be on <br /> guard against a sense of security not <br /> warranted by the protective equipment <br /> being used . <br /> f . Know the corrective actions in the event of <br /> spills or personal exposure to. fluids, blood, <br /> or tissues , the appropriate reporting <br /> procedures, and the medical monitoring in <br /> cases of suspected parenteral exposure . <br /> 1 . BLOOD OR BODY FLUID SPILLS : Should be <br /> cleaned while wearing latex or vinyl <br /> gloves . The initial amount should be <br /> soaked up with paper towels and placed in <br /> container for contaminated waste . <br /> Decontaminate the area of the spill with <br /> a freshly prepared 1 : 10 solution of 5 .25% <br /> sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) . <br /> 2 . PERSONAL EXPOSURE TO BLOOD OR BODY <br /> FLUIDS : Any accidental skin contact with <br /> blood or body fluid should be washed <br /> thoroughly with soap and water. <br /> Any needlestick or cuts from sharp <br /> objects should also be cleansed with soap <br /> and water. <br /> All exposure to blood and body fluids <br /> must be .reported to the individual ' s <br /> immediate supervisor .
