Charter Way COPY To
Stockton, CA 95206 COPYTO
COPY TO
TRANSPORT OF HAZARDOUS WASTE TO THE AUSTIN ROAD LANDFILL
On Tuesday, January 13, 1998 Delta Container Truck#463 brought hazardous waste
to the Austin Road Landfill. This waste was from Doctors Hospital in Manteca
(Hospital) and consisted of medical waste in red hazardous waste bags that were
concealed in regular black garbage bags and mixed with commercial waste.
The City's inspector found the waste during a routine load check and immediately
notified the County Health Department as required. During a meeting at the site on
January 13th, the County informed representatives of the Hospital that the material
must be properly contained and removed from the site by a licensed hazardous waste
contractor. The Hospital hired Erickson Inc. to perform the packaging and hauling of
the hazardous waste. Erickson employees, wearing protective clothing, worked from
Wednesday morning till Friday morning packaging the waste in 90 gallon drums. On
Friday, January 16th, the hazardous waste was removed from the landfill. In all, 156
drums were needed.
Because of the liabilities involved and the types of waste this Hospital generates, the
City will not be accepting waste from the Hospital until Delta Container puts into place a
procedure that wl insure that this incident is not repeated. If you have any questions,
please contact rre at 937-8827.
ST%PENCHEN l
DEPUTY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR/SWJQ` --'
cc: Dwane Milnes, City Manager
Bart Thiitgen, Assistant City Attorney
Jim Giottonini, Public Works Director
Doug Wilson, County Health Dept.
Jeff Hackett, Waste Board
"STOCKTON...CALIFORNIA'S SUNRISE SEAPORT"
