Turn off the source, if possible (e.g., cap or plug pipe lines, close valves, repair dikes) <br /> b. Action must be performed by personnel appropriately trained to handle the spilled material. <br /> Contain/prevent the liquid from spreading within the soils, and into the air and groundwater <br /> using the following procedures: <br /> ■ Use berms or sandbags to prevent the liquid from spreading. <br /> ■ Excavate a temporary holding trench if the volume of liquid is large and the liquid is to <br /> be subsequently pumped to a tanker for treatment. <br /> ■ Remove contaminated soils to an approved location for treatment and disposal. If soils <br /> are contaminated by a volatile liquid, cover with a layer of uncontaminated soil. <br /> 2.6.2.8 Hazardous Waste <br /> 1. Recognize and Evaluate the Emergency <br /> a.. Observe suspicious looking containers, such as chemical drums or containers labeled as <br /> a hazardous substance. <br /> 2. Take Safety Precautions <br /> a.
