WMU D-99 Construction September 1999
Forward Landfill Job No.986011.02
one side of the air channel on the seams. Vector also observed that the vacuum
box testing was conducted according to the specifications.
The seam number, date, technician, beginning pressure in and final
pressure, start time and end time, location, and passing test results were logged
by Vectors CQA Monitor on a geomembrane pressure testing log. This
information is presented within Appendix K. A geomembrane repair log including
descriptions, location, and date of testing was kept by Vectors CQA Monitor.
This information is also presented in Appendix K.
5.4.7 Geomembrane Destructive Seam Testing
In addition to nondestructive quality control, destructive samples were
obtained at random intervals of approximately one sample per 500 linear feet of
seam. A total of 59 destructive samples (43 samples from WMU D-99/Eastern
Ash Pit and 16 samples from the Class II Leachate Impoundment) were
obtained. Additional destructive samples were obtained if there were any
failures or if there was an indication of overheating, contamination, or other
adverse conditions.
A sample at least 12 inches wide by 42 inches long was cut by GSE and
was divided among Forward (a 12" x 12" sample for archive), GSE (a 12"x 12"
sample for their records), and Vector's on-site geosynthetic laboratory (the
remaining 12" x 18" specimen for determination of bonded seam strength in
shear and peel). The destructive samples were marked with the seaming
apparatus, operator identification, location, sample number, date, and time
welded. The samples were tested with a certified, calibrated tensiometer
according to the requirements of ASTM D-4437.
After seam strength tests for the destructive samples were obtained, the
results were given verbally to GSE personnel and were also reviewed by
Vector's CQA Monitor prior to placement of the leachate collection and removal
system (LCRS). The results of the destructive seam tests performed by Vector
are presented within Appendix K. All seam strength tests met the project
specifications for shear and peel strength prior to being accepted.
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 12438 Loma Rica Dr., #C • Grass Valley, CA• (530)272-2448
-15-
