WMU FU-03,WMU F-West Leachate Impoundment and Desilting Basin February 2004
Forward Landfill Job No.021605.03
® Destructive Seam Testing
General- In addition to non-destructive testing, destructive samples were obtained at
random locations to evaluate seam strength and integrity. The samples were tested for
shear strength and peel strength (ASTM D6392).
Location and Frequency—Vector's CQA Monitor selected the locations of
approximately one sample per 500 linear feet of seam. Within WMU FU-03 and the
leachate impoundment a total of 61 destructive samples were collected and tested from
approximately 30,500 linear feet of seam, resulting in a frequency of 1 test per 500
linear feet. Additional destructive samples were obtained if there were failures or if
there was an indication of overheating, contamination, or other adverse conditions.
Sampling Procedure - GSE cut the samples as directed by Vector's CQA Monitor.
Vector's CQA Monitor observed the cutting and assigned sample numbers, and
reviewed sample information (sample number, seam number, seaming apparatus,
operator identification, location, date, and time welded). Vector's CQA Monitor recorded
the samples collected and sample location on the panel layout drawing.
The holes in the geomembrane resulting from destructive seam sampling were covered
by GSE immediately after sampling. The repair was completed by placing an extrusion
welded patch of the same material. The continuity of the new seams in the repaired
area was tested with the same procedure as described in the vacuum box testing
procedures discussed previously.
Size of Samples - Prior to testing in the laboratory, two samples, one at each end of the
actual sample location, were cut for field-testing. If both specimens passed the field
test, the sample was taken to the laboratory for testing. The size of the destructive
samples was approximately 12 inches wide by 42 inches long.
Laboratory Testing - The samples were taken to Vector's on-site laboratory for
destructive testing of the seam. The samples were tested with a certified, calibrated
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive -Grass Valley, CA 95945 -(530)272-2448
-28-
