The prepared subgrade surface shall be smooth and free of major irregularities. <br /> The subgrade should contain no exposed particles larger than 3 inches or other <br /> surface irregularities which, in the opinion of the QA/QC CONSULTANT, <br /> will damage the overlying GCL, or 60-mil HDPE geomembrane. <br /> 3. Overexcavation below the established lining subgrade by the EARTHWORK <br /> CONTRACTOR shall, at his expense, be backfilled with Clay Liner Material <br /> or General Earthfill Material as directed by the QA/QC CONSULTANT. <br /> 4. Once completed, all traffic shall be kept off the lining subgrade. <br /> 5. The lining subgrade shall be maintained in the finished condition until the first <br /> succeeding course is placed. Any damage to the prepared lining subgrade by <br /> the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall be repaired, at the EARTHWORK <br /> CONTRACTOR's expense. Any damage to the prepared lining subgrade by <br /> the GEOSYNTHETICS CONTRACTOR, including those caused by a delay <br /> of the GEOSYNHETICS CONTRACTOR, shall be at the <br /> GEOSYNTHETICS CONTRACTOR's expense. <br /> 6. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall notify the OWNER at least 3 <br /> working days in advance of when the subgrade is completed and ready for as- <br /> built surveys. The OWNER will survey the top of the base and slope subgrade <br /> in accordance with Section 01410, SURVEYS. The survey shall provide <br /> coordinates and elevations of the subgrade surface at a minimum of 75-foot <br /> centers and delineating prominent features. The results of the survey will be <br /> provided to the QA/QC CONSULTANT within 2 days of the survey for <br /> approval prior to placing overlying materials. The QA/QC CONSULTANT <br /> shall have 2 working days to review survey results and may independently <br /> verify survey results. The time taken by the QA/QC CONSULTANT in <br /> checking and verifying the survey results will be considered included in the <br /> total calendar days allotted the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR before <br /> liquidated damages are assessed. <br /> B. After completion of clay liner and subgrade fill,proof-roll the surface of the entire <br /> lined area with a loaded dump truck or similar heavy-wheeled equipment to detect <br /> soft or loose zones. Notify the QA/QC CONSULTANT prior to commencement <br /> of proof-rolling. If soft or loose zones are found, excavate the soft or loose <br /> material to a depth accepted by the QA/QC CONSULTANT, then fill with Clay <br /> Liner or General Earthfill, as appropriate. The Clay Liner or General Earthfill <br /> shall be compacted as specified for such fill. <br /> 3.9 CONSTRUCTION OF CLAY LINER <br /> A. General: <br /> I. Clay Liner Material shall be processed to meet the requirements of Article <br /> 2.4 of this Specification. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR may request <br /> ® information from the OWNER on successful processing and placement <br /> procedures used for the construction of previous WMUs at the Forward <br /> Landfill.
