n
Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward landfill
4.4.3 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are
recorded at least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a
sump it is pumped into the surface impoundment (WMU-F North) for evaporation.
During the 2015 monitoring year, leachate was observed at all of the holding areas
except WMU D-87 and WMU D-88 A/B and according to the Operations Manager, no
leachate was taken off site during the 2015 monitoring year. Freeboard at WMU-F
North ranged from approximately 2.58 to 10.92 feet during the 2015 monitoring year.
Value Engineering conducted a continuity test of the leachate collection and removal
system (LCRS) on August 7 and 8, 2015 at the Forward Unit. The tracer dye test results
indicate that continuity is present across the LCRS units WMU-F North, and no excessive
leachate is backed up in the drainage layer or sump of the LCRS units.
4.5 Austin Unit
4.5.1 Groundwater
Groundwater elevations measured during the 2015 monitoring year generally reflect
seasonal precipitation patterns. Hydrographs depicting historical groundwater
elevations are presented in Appendix G and indicate generally static trends with some
declines over the past 3 years. During the 2015 monitoring year groundwater flow was
generally directed to the north and northeast.
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Austin Unit during the 2015 monitoring
year are generally similar to those observed in the previous monitoring year. The
following table summarizes inorganic CL exceedances for DMP wells during the 2015
monitoring year.
Austin Unit CL Exceedances for 2015 Monitoring Year
Well
Constituent
2015 Monitoring Period
AMW-6
Bicarbonate, Calcium,
1Q15
Nitrate
AMW-6
Bicarbonate, Calcium,
2Q15
Magnesium, potassium,
strontium, TDS
AMW-6
Bicarbonate, Calcium,
3Q15
Magnesium, potassium,
strontium
AMW-6
Bicarbonate, Calcium,
4Q15
Magnesium, potassium,
strontium
M:\ 2015.0014\FA_4Q15.docx 17
1/29/2016, Rev. 0
