® 5. A qualified person must supervise the trench or excavation at <br /> ® all times. <br /> ® 6 . Remove trees, poles, boulders, and similar objects which may <br /> ® be hazardous to workers. <br /> ® 7 . The qualified person shall assess the job site from possible <br /> moving ground, also after rainstorm, earthquake, or other <br /> ® events prior to the employees exposure to the excavation. <br /> ® 8 . Workers shall be protected by shoring, sloping, benching <br /> ® casing or other equivalent alternative methods. Protective <br /> devices or materials which are utilized shall conform with the <br /> type of soil present at the job site. <br /> ® 9 . Spoils/dirt shall be kept 2 feet from the edge of the <br /> trench/excavation. Check for cracked and sloughing around and <br /> above the excavation area. <br /> ® 10. Provide a convenient way for workers to enter and leave the <br /> ® excavation, ladder shall be a minimum 25 feet from one <br /> ® another. <br /> ® 11. If crossing is placed above trench/excavation, a standard <br /> ® guard rail shall be installed when the depth of the excavation <br /> is 7 1/2 feet or more. <br /> ® 12 . Do not excavate beneath the base of an adjacent foundation, <br /> ® retaining wall or other structure so as to undermine such <br /> ® i structure. Support undermined sidewalk and adjoining <br /> structures if these conditions exist. <br /> ® 13 . Do not use an existing wall or structure as a retaining wall <br /> until it will safely support the expected load. This must be <br /> ® determined by the qualified personnel. <br /> ® 14 . Protective barrier, barricade, caution sign shall be provided <br /> at the excavation on remote area, or are where the employee <br /> ® works so they may not fall into the excavation. <br /> 15 . Backfill temporary wells, pits, and shafts immediately upon <br /> completion of the operation. <br /> ® 16. Shoring and sloping shall comply with the state of California <br /> Code of Regulations. The shoring design of an <br /> ® <br /> excavation/trench with a depth of 20 ft. or more shall be <br /> ® prepared by a Registered Civil Engineer in the State of <br /> California. <br /> ® 17 . All excavations shall be visually inspected before <br /> ® backfilling, to ensure that it is safe to backfill. <br /> ® 18. Excavating equipment shall not be operated near tops of cuts, <br /> ® banks and cliffs if employees are working below. <br /> 19 . Tractors, bulldozers, scrapers and carryalls shall not operate <br /> where there is a possibility of overturning in dangerous areas <br /> like edges of deep fills, cut banks and steep slopes. <br /> ® - 10 - <br />
