File No. 20-1008-36 " KLEINFELDER
July 14, 1995
The SM stockpile borrow soil was transported by haul trucks from Granite's Tracy plant to the
test pad where additional lab testing was performed.
TFST PAD CONFIGURATION
The test pads were approximately 150 feet in length and approximately 25 feet wide. The long
axis of Test Pads 1, 2, and 3 were aligned in a east/west direction. Test Pads 4 and 5 were
aligned in northwest/southeast and north/south directions, respectively. The County staked the
test pad areas.
The test pads were designed to consist of the following blends of materials with corresponding
minimum compaction requirements (by percentage dry weight):
• Test Pad 1 - 80% Stockpile/20% red clay at 95 percent relative compaction
• Test Pad 2 - 70% Stockpile/30% red clay at 90 percent relative compaction
• Test Pad 3 - 80% Stockpile/20% Ione clay at 92 percent relative compaction
• Test Pad 4 -70% Stockpile/30% red clay at 90 percent relative compaction
• Test Pad 5 - 100% Stockpile at 90 percent relative compaction
Test s 1 through 4 are required to meet maximum permeability specifications of 1x10
P g 1 Pe tY
cm/sec. Test pads 1, 2, 3, and 5 were constructed on fairly level surfaces. Test Pad 4 was
constructed on a slope, to evaluate compaction. This test pad has the same soil composition as
Test Pad 2. Test pad 5 is required to meet a maximum permeability specification of lx 10-5
cm/sec, This test pad material type may be used as an alternative cover based on HELP
modeling.
SITE PREPARATION
Prior to construction of the test pads, the site was cleared of all brush, grass and any other organic
matter which had grown subsequent to the completion of the foundation layer. Foundation
material removed during the course of this procedure was replaced and the foundation layer was
restored to its original final grade and surveyed by the County. The foundation layer was
compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent (ASTM test method D-1557).
TEST PAD CONSTRUCTION
Approximately 204 tons of SM borrow materials were placed by County personnel on Test Pads 1
and 3; 170 tons of SM borrow was placed on Test Pads 2 and 4. Approximately 15 inches of
GSM.-md CH195 Page 2 of 10 July 14, 1995
20-1008-36 0 1995,Kleinfelder,Inc.
