s
Solt ] ORINGISAMPLING
The soil borings \vcll be chilled using 8-10 inch diameter, continuous flight, hollow
stc,uti auger and a Mobile 13-61, or similar, drill rig. Auger flights will be steam cleaned
with Alconox and deionized water prior to and between drilling to minimize the possibility
of cross-contamination. Drilling will be performed under the guidance of a field geologist
and the earth materials in the borings will he logged as drilled. During drilling, soil samples
will be collected continuously within the first soil boring drilled and every five(5)feet in the
remaining two soil borings drilled. Soil samples will be retrieved using a California-modified
split-spoon sampler equipped with laboratory cleaned brass slaeves and a five foot barrel
sampler. Continuous sampling will assist the geologist in evaluating the subsurface geology
and provide technical guidance for monitoring well screen placement. Samples will be
collected by advancing the boring to a point just above the sampling depth, then driving the
sampler into the native soil through the hollow center of the auger. The sampler will be
driven 18-inches with a standard 140-pound hammer dropped 30 inches. The number of
blows required to drive the sampler each successive 6-inches will be counted and recorded
to give an indication of soil consistency.
A representative sample from each sample interval will be tested with a HNU 101
photoionization meter. Screening will be performed by positioning the HNU probe
approximately 1-inch from the fresh surface of each sediment tube recovered during
sampling. The HNU reading will be obtained promptly after removal of the samples from
5
