. carbon canisters is filled with 250 pounds of virgin 1200 mesh activated
carbon which effectively removes the MTBE from the water Each of t h e
three canisters has a sample port which allows a sample to be collected
and analyzed at prescribed intervals to determine at what point MTBE h as
broken through a specific canister ASE will replace the canisters when
they no longer are effective at removing the MTBE from the water
Currently, the schedule for sample collection and analysis is quarterly
Also in April 2001, ASE excavated a trench between the well receiving
wellhead treatment and the easternmost residence Within this trench, an
electrical conduit and water pipe were installed that connected the water
from the well and power to the pump to the easternmost residence Thus,
the treated water is now supplying both houses at the subject property
WATER TER SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
After the system was installed, started, and operating, ASE collected
baseline samples for analysis On April 23, 2001, a water sample was
collected from the well prior to treatment This sample was labeled
17933-INF-42301 A second sample was collected after carbon canister
number 1 This sample was labeled 17933-GACI-42301 A third sample
• was collected after carbon canister number 2 This sample was labeled
17933-GAC2-42301 All three samples were placed within an ice chest
containing wet ice while transported to Kiff Analytical of Davis, California
(FLAP# 2236) under chain of custody procedures
Sample 17933-INF-42301 and 17933-GACI-42301 were analyzed by Kiff
Analytical for a full scan EPA Method 8260B which includes total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (collectively known as BTEX), and the seven
fuel oxygenates, and for TPH as diesel by EPA Method 8015 Sample
17933-GAC2-42301 was placed on HOLD A copy of the certified
analytical report is attached in Appendix B
WATER SAMPLE ANALYTICAL RESULTS
• The only compound identified in sample 17933-INF-42301 (the pre-
treated water sample) was MTBE at 0 78 parts per billion (ppb)
• No compounds were identified in sample 17933-GAC1-42301, which
was collected after carbon canister number 1 This proves that t h e
• treatment system is in fact working as designed
