MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN <br /> III. SEGREGATION AND CONTAINMENT <br /> Medical waste generated in this hospital and the locations at which they are generated are : <br /> Category of Medical waste Location Generated and Containment Process <br /> Generated in exam rooms, treatment area, lab <br /> area, and surgery room. Each area has red plastic <br /> sharps containers at point of generation. <br /> Sharps <br /> When sharps container is full, lids must be <br /> securely closed and container must be packaged <br /> for shipping or storage until transporter arrives . <br /> Medical waste suspected of being exposed to or <br /> infected with zoonotic material must be placed <br /> into red plastic bags at the point of generation <br /> using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, <br /> including rubber gloves (or two pairs of <br /> Medical (infectious) waste disposable gloves) , protective apron, safety <br /> glasses and face shield. All reusable PPE must be <br /> disinfected or appropriately discarded following <br /> use. All disposable PPE will be appropriately <br /> discarded following use . (See also Personal <br /> Protective Equipment. ) <br /> In pharmacy. Segregated from current inventory <br /> Expired Non - Controlled Medications upon expiration until shipped to reverse <br /> distributor. <br /> Upon expiration, segregated from current <br /> inventory and maintained in locked drawer; <br /> Expired Controlled Medications remains in DVM ' s control until surrendered to <br /> Federal Express for shipment to reverse <br /> distributor. <br /> Placed in an appropriate leak-proof container and <br /> labeled "high heat- incineration only" and stored <br /> Expired and/ or Partially Used in secure area in hospital and handled according <br /> Hazardous Medications to California hazardous waste regulations . When <br /> full, picked up by Stericycle Specialty Waste <br /> Solutions . <br /> Containers and outer containers, when sealed, will not be reopened in this hospital. Ruptured <br /> or leaking packages of medical waste will be placed into a larger container without disturbing <br /> the original seal . <br /> All bags and containers used to contain and package medical waste meet applicable OSHA Blood <br /> Borne Pathogens Standard for containment and labeling. <br /> Supply of additional empty containers is stored in the following locations $ <br /> Page 2 of 9 <br />
