Nov.4,1997
Hyponex Composting Facility
Linden Ca.
Plant 67
To: Compost Personnel
Subj.: Best Management Practices.
From: R. M. Soares
The winter season has started as far as the way that we will be taking care of the compost
site, and the way that we will manage the compost from now until the end of winter.
This is very important that the following items be done and maintained all winter long.
Please do all you can to take care of everything that is on this sheet.
The most important thing that needs to be done is preparation of the windrow pad areas so
that water will run off as fast as possible. We can do this by grading and keeping windrows cleaned
up as soon turning is completed.
Please do not let your loader buckets dig into the ground on the site. Every time that you dig
water will stand,we can not have standing water on the compost area after a rain.If we have to take
a shovel and dig a trail for water to get to a drain we will have to do it.
You should take a few minutes every day and look around the site for area's that need to be
filled or graded to make the water leave fast.
We will be making some changes to the scarab so that the windrow will be round on top so
water will not get into the windrow and get the moisture content above 60%. After every turn with
the scarab we will have to put the sides and the ends in THAT DAY.
When you are hauling product to the screen plant take a little less and don't spill the
material on the ground. When you drop material on the ground it will cause problems with the
storm water run off.We are governed by THE STORM RUN OFF CONTROL BOARD.What this
means is we can no longer let the water run from the site with impurities in the water. We will have
to take samples of the water and test for ammonia content in the water at different locations around
the plant.Ammonia will be present in the water if material is left on the ground or windrows are not
cleaned up.
The area around the screen plant will need to be worked on so that the surge pile is at least
eight feet from the drain ditch. Two days before a rain we will make a levy beside the drain so the
water will not be able to get into the drain water at this point.
The over pile will have to be taken away from the drain on the east side and moved to area's
in the compost site so that we will be able to feed windrows when we need to and not use a lot of time
doing it. You guy's are already working on this.
We will not be able to keep overs at the screen plant during the winter because of a chance
of Ammonia run off. Please take the time that we need to make this happen.
1
