In addition to labeling each container according to its hazard class, each of the flammable, reactive,
N
orrosive, and toxic containers must be marked with the yellow hazardous waste label. These yellow
hazardous waste labels must be completely filled out when new hazardous waste begins to accumulate.
See the Appendix for reference.
Universal Waste
The fifth waste container shall be labeled and used for universal waste disposal. Additionally, a
cardboard box should be used for the storage of used fluorescent bulbs and shall be affixed with a
universal waste label specifying its contents. The two types of universal waste we will accumulate at
our stores are:
• Universal Waste —Fluorescent Bulbs
• Universal Waste — Used Batteries
It is never acceptable to break used fluorescent bulbs and discard with regular waste nor is it acceptable
to discard used batteries with regular waste. Universal waste labels must be filled out completely when
new universal waste begins to accumulate.
ACCUMULATION TIME
Hazardous and universal wastes are allowed to accumulate for a set amount days after the waste is
initially introduced. Accumulation time begins when the waste is first introduced into the container for
disposal and must be disposed of within the set amount of accumulation days set forth and stated in the
California Code of Regulations and Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste may accumulate for up to 180 days after the initial waste is introduced. Once
hazardous waste is introduced into a container for disposal we have 180 days to dispose of the initial
waste and all other wastes added for disposal thereafter. `
The yellow hazardous waste label must be completely and accurately filled out at the time of initial
waste introduction.
Universal Waste
Universal waste may accumulate for up to one year from the date that the initial universal waste was
Y
enerated. Once universal waste is introduced into the container for disposal we have one year to
dispose of the initial universal waste and all other wastes added for disposal thereafter.
The universal waste label must be completely and accurately filled out at the time of initial waste
introduction.
