f
STATE OF CALIFORNIA GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN,Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD— '
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3443 ROUTIER ROAD
SACRAMENTO,CA 95827-3098
26 June 1989 p
Ms. Lisa F. Box 990
Stockton CA 95201
COFFEE GROUNDS DISPOSAL
As promised during our 19 June telephone conversation, I am sending you copies
of the test results on soil , coffee grounds and ponded liquid samples taken at
the Robert Ronyak site on McKinley Avenue, Manteca. I am also sending copies
of test results obtained indirectly from Nestles Foods.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the ponded liquid at the Ronyak site was
determined by EPA Method 160.1. An employee of JL Analytical Services informed
me that their TDS determination was made on liquid extracted from fresh samples
of coffee grounds. I did not ascertain the method used. Regardless of which
test you rely on, the reported TDS levels are far in excess of the secondary
drinking water standard which recommends a maximum contaminant level of 500 mg/l ,
an upper level of 1,000 mg/l and a short term level Of 1,500 mg/1.
If coffee grounds are to be stored, it is necessary that adequate protection for
water quality be provided. Storing the grounds on land or in pits without
adequate separation from ground water does not conform to water quality
regulations and is subject to regulatory or enforcement action. Regulatory
action may include site assessment and ground water monitoring on any site where
the coffee grounds have been stored in the past without adequate safeguards.
If you have any questions or comments in this matter, please call me at (916)
361-5711.
FF I fa,
r ,
LOUIS F.
