D. CORRAL HOLLOW SANITARY LANDFILL
CHSL is located at 31130 South Corral Hollow Road, in southern San
Joaquin County, approximately five miles south of the City of Tracy, at the
intersection of Interstate 580 and Corral Hollow Road. CHSL covers
approximately 58 acres, of which 43 acres was permitted disposal area.
The remaining area is comprised of access roads, storm water retention
ponds, setbacks for environmental monitoring, and firebreaks. Land within
1,000 feet of the facility is used for grazing and agriculture.
CHSL was certified closed in 1996. The closure cover consists of a two to
six-foot foundation layer under a one-foot minimum thick, low permeability
soil layer, covered by a one-foot thick vegetative surface layer. Currently
CHSL is under post closure maintenance.
1.3 REASON FOR INSTALLING POLYETHYLENE (PE) TUBES INSIDE OF
PVC PIPES
The reason for installing PE tubing inside of existing PVC pipes is to reduce
the sample time spent, saving labor hours and labor costs. Currently, it
takes up to 5-45 minutes to collect a sample of air from the soil gas wells at
the various sites, depending upon well depth. By installing the tubes in side
the pipes, sample times may be reduced to as little as several minutes per
sampling well.
1.4 SOIL GAS MONITORING WELLL GTI
Soil Gas Monitoring Wells are located along the perimeter of the individual
landfills. Please refer to figures 1-4 for maps of the well locations.
2.0 WORK TASKS
It is the plan to bring all materials on site ready to install. It is possible that
some tubing may need to be perforated on site. If no on site perforation is
needed, then the on site work tasks will include:
1. the removal of existing connection valves;
2. assembly of the upgraded connection ports, PE tubes, and metal rod;
3. feeding of the PE tube inside the PVC pipe and lowering of the PE tube
until the tube reaches the bottom of the sampling well;
4. connect the new port to the top of the PVC pipe
5. cutting and removing any excess PE tube to complete the upgrade.
There are three different types of sampling wells that will require a change
to the as built sampling ports. At FHSL and NCRCSL, the PVC pipes are
Work Plan-Groundwater Monitoring Well Installation San Joaquin County
March 28,2012 Department Of Public Works
2 Solid Waste Division
