n
k
C
C
u
11
v
The work does not include excavation of refuse or contact with refuse; however, the
work is in the vicinity of buried refuse and other materials. Potential hazards exist
due to the presence of buried refuse, including those associated with landfill gas
(LFG) and the refuse itself. Also, the work is in the vicinity of an oil pipeline, the
location of which will be marked prior to drilling.
1.A. Landfill Gas
When buried in a landfill, refuse and other organic material produces LFG. LFG is
approximately 50 percent methane by volume and may contain other contaminants.
Potential hazards associated with LFG are due to:
1. Oxygen deficiency
2. Combustible characteristics of LFG
3. Potential for hydrogen sulfide in LFG
Potential hazards include:
A. Fire
B. Explosion
C. Asphyxiation
LFG may also contain trace concentrations of organic compounds. Dilution of LFG
in air to below the OSHA safety limits of 0.5 percent methane (10 percent of the
Lower Explosive Limit) usually reduces the concentration of trace components to
below detection limits.
LFG can move through soils, especially through sandy layers that exist at the site.
Movement of LFG through soils can remove the odorous compounds, such that the
LFG can be detected only with the proper test equipment.
1.13. Refuse
Household refuse is not anticipated to be excavated in this investigation, although residue
from refuse burning is anticipated. The following is provided for completeness.
The landfill contains household refuse, demolition debris, tree trimmings, and
miscellaneous refuse. To the best knowledge of the County, hazardous materials have
not been disposed at the site. However, some items that are currently defined as
hazardous waste (paint, insecticides, etc.) may have been included in household waste
disposed at the site.
Work Plan -Soil Gas Well Installation Page 4 of 5 Solid Waste Division
Corral Hollow Landfill Public Works Department
