SITE RECONNAISSANCE INTERVIEW AND OBSERVATIONS REPORT (Cont'd)
Site: Marlowe Property
An onsite domestic well, which provided drinking water to the 45 workers and the residents on
site, is on the northern portion of the site. The well was taken out of service in 1993 because of
HVOCs contamination. Investigation-derived wastes from an UST gasoline remedial
investigation activities are stored in 55-gallon drums on the northern portion of the site.
Since 1966, the Marlowe site has been leased by several businesses. The businesses that have
generated hazardous substances include MPI and Sweets Tinware. MPI, a label manufacturing
facility, and Sweets Tinware, which spray paints old metal containers, both generate solvent wastes
in the processes conducted on site. None of the other businesses has generated any significant
quantities of hazardous substances on site. At the time of the site visit, hazardous substances
stored at the site included two 55-gallon drums containing solvent wastes stored at the MPI facility
and approximately 15 gallons of solvent wastes stored at the Sweets Tinware facility. The solvent
wastes are removed from the site by a licensed hazardous waste hauler every 90 days.
Information on historical quantities of solvent wastes generated on site is not available.
The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division (EHD) has been involved with the site
since 1988. Four USTs containing gasoline and diesel fuel were removed from the northern part
of the site in 1988. To determine whether or not the USTs had impacted groundwater beneath the
site EHD, working with the site owner, has implemented onsite soil and groundwater sampling
events. Four monitoring wells have been installed on site. Analytical results of groundwater
samples collected from three of these wells have indicated the presence of total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) and halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs). In addition,
HVOCs were detected in the onsite domestic well. This well was taken out of service in 1993.
Currently, the site owner is working with the EHD to implement soil and groundwater
remediation activities as pertaining to the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination on site. As part of
this process, the site owner has installed a vapor extraction well on site and is in the process of
submitting a soil remediation plan to the EHD.
Groundwater flow direction beneath the site is from southwest to northeast. Surface water flow
across the site is to the northwest.
PA Marlowe Property-SS • 6/95
E-2
Printed on 50% recycled paper.
