A
t
C. Leland Hall
February 7, 1985
Page Two
determined that the site is being covered at the end of each day. Also, I
have not noticed, nor have the landfill employees noticed, unusual odors
coming from the site during the last several weeks. The foreman did- report,
however, that a property owner placed some dead calves on the highway right
of way near the Harney Lane Landfill. These calves were on the roadside
for approximately two weeks until a local tallow company picked them up for
processing. Strong odors permeated the entire area from these dead animals,
and perhaps this was the source of the odor complaints.
Recently, the County completed excavation of the final pit at the Harney
Land Sanitary Landfill. The Solid Waste Facility's permit allows excava-
tion to the elevation of 50 feet above sea level. Attached are cross
sections of the final pit construction and the engineering notes which in-
dicate that the pit was constructed to an elevation of approximately 56
feet to 59 feet above sea level. Therefore, the bottom of the pit is
higher than that allowable by the Solid Waste Facility's permit, and the
complaint is unfounded.
Should you desire further information on any of these matters, please
contact me.
Very truly yours,
THOMAS E.
