GeologuafTechnics Inc. Page 4
U.S.Can Company
Soil and Groundwater Investigation Work Plan
Project No. 397.2
August 9, 1996
• A bailer blank for each well will be collected prior to sampling by filling the
decontaminated stainless steel bailer with water (provided by the laboratory) and then
filling a VOA vial (provided by the laboratory) using the same procedures for actual
sample collection.
Bailer blanks for each sample, along with a field blank (prepared from water provided by the
laboratory poured into a VOA vial on site), will accompany the samples to the laboratory and
serve as checks against cross contamination.
A chain of custody document, listing all samples collected, accompanies the samples from
field to laboratory, thereby providing a means to track their movement and insure their
integrity.
All water purged from each monitoring well and not used as a sample, will be placed in a 55
gallon DOT approved container, properly labeled and stored on site until its proper
disposition can be arranged.
2.5 Soil and Groundwater Sample Analyses
The following summarizes the sample testing proposed for this phase of work.
• Test up to (4) soil samples from each borehole (including one from the capillary fringe).
• Soil samples will be tested for the following compounds:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Petroleum hydrocarbons (i.e., gasoline, kerosene, diesel, motor oil\.
Selected soil samples will be tested by EPA method TCLP for leachable VOCs.
Selected samples may be tested for geotechnical parameters for use in risk evaluation.
• Test (1) water sample for the initial monitoring event plus one quality assurance
quality control (QA/QC) field blank and travel blank per monitoring event.
• Water samples will be tested for the following:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Petroleum hydrocarbons (i.e., gasoline, kerosene, diesel, motor oil)
Based on field screening observations at least four soil samples from each boring including
one from the capillary fringe will be submitted to a licensed analytical laboratory (ABC Pan-
Ag Labs of Madera) and analyzed for volatile organic compounds by EPA method 8240, and
petroleum hydrocarbons analyses (TPH-Gasoline by EPA method 5030/8015m, TEPH by
3510/8015m). The detection limits for these compounds are listed below. A Chain of
Custody will be completed for all samples collected and tracked to ensure sample integrity.
DetectionLimits: 8240 TPH-Gas TEPH --TCLP*
Water µg 50 50
Soil µ g 5 - mg
= reporting limits IFFTCEP is very matrix aependent
Water samples will be tested for volatile organic compounds using EPA method 8240, TPH-
Gas using EPA method 5030/8015(m), and TEPH by EPA 3510/8015m. The detection limits
for these compounds in water are listed above in Table 1.
