Site Characterization- Second Event Page 5
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
April 27, 2000
Select samples collected from each boring were submitted for analysis as
follows:
• Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons by EPA method 3540/8015(m),
The detection limits for those analyses are listed on the attached data tables.
2.1.4 Geology & Soil Analytical Data
A detailed log was made of each boring. The information noted included such
data as sample depths, blow counts from hammer driven sampling devices,
horizons of detectable contamination (detected by field methods), soil
classification utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System and sediment
description (color, texture, composition, hardness, moisture content, and post-
depositional changes that have occurred in the sediments). An organic vapor
meter (OVM) was used to screen samples for the presence of organic vapor in
the Geo-Probe soil borings.
The soils at the site generally consist of clean, medium- to very coarse-
grained sands. Silt layers were noted below the 15 foot interval in SB-8 & 9
and at the 25 foot interval in SB-10. Hydrocarbon odors were noted in
borings SB-9 & 10 and MW-7. The boring logs for borings SB-8,9,10,11 & 12
and MW-6 & 7 are attached as Appendix C.
The soils at the site may be characterized as follows:
5 foot interval
The uppermost soil sampling interval consisted of a mix of fair to poorly
sorted silty sands. This soil was generally reddish brown to weak red in
color. In some cases, larger (1-2 mm) clasts were noted. No measurable
OVM readings were noted from this interval in any of the borings.
10-15 foot intervals
Soils from this interval generally can be characterized by medium- to coarse
grained sands, well graded or fine grained, well sorted sand. In borings SB-8,
a minor silt layer was also visible at the 15 foot interval. The soils at this
interval were generally brown/reddish brown to reddish grey with the
exception of soils from SB-10 & MW-7 which were grey to pinkish grey.
Slight hydrocarbon odors were noted in this interval in SB-9 at 10 feet, SB-10
at 10 and 15 feet, and MW-7 at 15'. OVM readings above 0 were recorded in
the 10 and 15 foot intervals from SB-10 as well (8 and 4 ppmv, respectively).
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
