Site Characterization - Second Event Page 6
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
April 27, 2000
20 foot interval
This interval is characterized by fine- to medium-grained sand, well sorted,
or well graded fine- to coarse-grained sands. A silt interval was present at 20
feet in SB-9. The soil color tended from brown-reddish brown to grey-reddish
grey. No measurable OVM readings were noted from this interval in any of
the borings.
25-28 foot interval
SB-10 was completed to this depth. The soil sample from the 25 foot interval
consisted of silt with some sand, brown in color. This was the last interval
sampled as the Geo-Probe was unable to penetrate to depths greater that 28
feet below grade. No measurable OVM readings were noted from this
interval in SB-10.
Soil analytical data is attached in tabular form in Appendix A. Soil samples
submitted for analysis from the Geo-Probe soil borings contained detectable
levels of"motor oil range petroleum hydrocarbons" at levels between 1.2 and
4.9 mg/Kg. The analytical chemist from the laboratory indicated that the
positive results from these samples were most likely from the plastic in the
' sample tubes, since the chromatographs suggested an unusual character for
the contaminant (not typical of a fuel hydrocarbon, and in the chemist's
interpretation, more indicative of plastic). Since the normal detection limit
for the TEPH analysis is 5 mg/Kg, this plastic would normally not be
detected, however, for the purposes of this investigation, the detection limits
were lowered to 0.3 mg/Kg.
A total of three soil samples were submitted for analysis from MW-6 and
MW-7. Samples from the 15 foot interval were submitted from both borings.
In addition, the 20 foot sample was submitted from MW-7. (Please note that
a clerical error was made during the completion of the chain of custody in
that the well numbers were switched. This is reflected in the chain and
laboratory report, however, the data was correctly entered into the data
table.) Soil samples from the 15 foot interval in MW-6 contained 0.4 mg/Kg
of diesel range organics. The sample from the 15 foot interval in MW-7
contained 1 mg/Kg diesel range organics while the 20 foot sample contained
non-detectable levels of extractable hydrocarbons.
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
