Work Plan- Site Characterization II Page 2
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
December 6, 1999
Soil and select groundwater samples from both areas contained detectable
levels of dielectric oil range petroleum hydrocarbons.
A soil gas survey was completed at the site in early March of 1999 to evaluate
locations for the later installation of monitoring wells. Results of the soil gas
survey suggest that there were points with medium to high concentrations of
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons. Monitoring wells were constructed at each of
these two points (MW-2 & MW-3). In addition, one monitoring well was
constructed at the end of what was interpreted to be a TPH groundwater
plume, based upon contoured soil gas data (MW-4).
Further investigation work was completed on April 19, 1999 to investigate
the initial contamination identified during the initial Phase IIA
Environmental Assessment. One well was installed adjacent to the seepage
pit and four were installed around the suspected point of release. A
groundwater sample from MW-4 contained low levels of diesel range
petroleum hydrocarbons (10.1 ppm). Soil samples from this well at the 10
foot interval contained 277 ppm dielectric oil while at the 15 foot interval, the
soil sample contained non-detectable levels of TEPH range petroleum
hydrocarbons. Groundwater and soil samples from the remaining wells and
the domestic well contained non-detectable levels of TEPH, BTEX and TPH-
Gasoline range petroleum hydrocarbons. In addition, MW-5 and the domestic
well at the site were tested for pollutant metals. Samples from both wells
contained background to non-detectable levels of pollutant metals. The
RWQCB subsequently indicated that no further action was required to
investigate this area.
The monitoring wells were again sampled in July of 1999. Again, samples
from monitoring wells MW-1, 2, 3 & 5 contained non-detectable levels of
petroleum hydrocarbons. MW-4 contained 7.84 ppm diesel range petroleum
hydrocarbons
On November 15, 1999, personnel from Geo-Phase Environmental Inc. as
well as yourself met with representatives of the RWQCB to discuss the steps
which would be needed to eventually obtain a "site closure" from that office.
This Work Plan has been prepared pursuant to the issues discussed in that
meeting.
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
