Health and Safety Plan, Subsurface Investigation <br />Potential New Court Site, Stockton, California <br /> <br />6.2 Hazardous Noise Environments <br />Working around large equipment often creates excessive noise. The effects of noise can include physical <br />damage to the ear, pain, and temporary and/or permanent hearing loss. Workers can also be startled, <br />annoyed, or distracted by noise during critical activities. <br />Earth Tech has compiled noise monitoring data, which indicates that work locations within 25 feet of <br />operating heavy equipment (drill rigs, earthworking equipment, etc.) can result in exposure to hazardous <br />levels of noise (levels greater than 90 dBA). Accordingly, all personnel are required to use hearing <br />protection (ear plugs or ear muffs) within 25 feet to any operating piece of heavy equipment. <br />The SH&EP may also monitor employee exposure to hazardous noise levels as part of Earth Tech's <br />Hearing Conservation Program. <br /> <br />6.3 Exposure Monitoring During Intrusive Activities <br />This section presents monitoring procedures that will be employed to assess employee exposure to <br />chemical and physical hazards. Monitoring will consist primarily of onsite determination of various <br />parameters (e.g., airborne contaminant concentrations and heat stress effects), but may be supplemented <br />by more sophisticated monitoring techniques, if necessary. <br />6.3.1 Monitoring Instrumentation <br />To assess the exposure potential to environmental contaminants during intrusive activities and <br />environmental sampling, onsite monitoring will be performed using the following types of real-time <br />instrumentation. <br />Instrument Manufacturer/Model* Substances Detected <br />Photoionization Detector (PID) RAE Systems mini-RAE <br />Photovac Microtip <br />HNu Model HNu <br />Petroleum hydrocarbons (as ppm) <br />Colorimetric Detector Tubes Sensidyne <br />Draeger <br />Benzene 0.5-10 ppm <br />Note: <br />* Or similar unit, as approved by Safety Professional <br />Project 104290.19.01 20 January 2009
