cotton (or other flame retardant material) coveralls,
rubber or neoprene work gloves (surgical gloves may be worn alone
when not handling heavy equipment),
steel toed rubber boots (mid-calf length),
OSHA/NIOSH approved hard hat conforming to ANSI Z89.2-1979 (impact
and electrical protection);
safety glasses or goggles.
Where relatively high concentrations of volatile organics are expected,
Level C protective equipment is required. This protectin includes the
wearing of organic vapor monitors (3M Standard Model 3500, or equivelent)
for our field personnel and drilling contractors crews as well as:
disposable, acid and chemical resistant coveralls (TYVEK),
rubber or neoprene outer gloves (18" length) with rubber inner gloves
(11" surgical),
chemical splash goggles,
OHSA/NIOSH approved hardhat conforming to ANSI Z89.2-1979, and
half-face respirators with combination acid gases/organic vapor
cartridges (Type F filters will be worn when dusty conditions
prevail).
Respirators should be readily available but need not be worn unless the HNu
gas analyzer indicates the presence of organic gases in excess of 10% of
the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) or excessively dusty conditions
prevail during drilling.
We suggest that the drilling contractor provide equivalent protective
equipment for their crews working in Level D or, if required, Level C
areas. Drillers and helpers should not wear gauntlet type gloves because
cuffs can easily get caught in moving parts.
Specific safety requirements follow:
All MARK personnel who will be working at the site, will undergo an
industrial hygiene baseline medical examination before commencing
work. This requirement does not apply to individuals who have taken
the examination during the past 12 months.
The same personnel must be fitted and fully instructed on the use of
respirators prior to starting the work.
Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or any practices
that increases the probability of hand-to-mouth transfer and
ingestion of material is prohibited in any area of drilling.
