Hands must be thoroughly washed upon leaving the work area and
before eating, drinking, or any other activities.
No facial hair, which interferes with the satisfactory fit of the
mask-to-face seal, is allowed on personnel.
Contact with contaminated or suspected contamination surfaces will be
avoided. Whenever possible, don't walk through puddles, mud and
other discolored surfaces; kneel on ground; lean, sit or place
equipment on drums, containers, vehicles, on the ground.
Medicine and alcohol can enhance the effects from exposure to toxic
chemicals. Prescribed drugs should not be taken by personnel where
the potential for absorption, inhalation, or ingestion of toxic
substances exists unless specifically approved by a qualified
physician. Alcoholic beverage intake offsite and during nonwork
hours will be minimized during Level C operations.
The number of individuals involved in drilling/sampling operations
will be kept to a minimum. Observers will stand a safe distance
upwind of drilling/sampling operations. No observers will be allowed
around the drill rig unless they are wearing OSHA/NIOSH approved
hardhats. If possible, drilling/sampling personnel will also
position themselves upwind of the sampling site while engaged in
drilling/sampling.
Nondisposable safety gear, sampling equipment, and drilling equipment
will be decontaminated before taken offsite. Drilling equipment can
be decontaminated by rinsing them free of soil and/or steam cleaning.
Washing with detergent solution followed by rinsing is preferred for
safety gear and sampling equipment.
During drilling ,and sampling operations for the Level C work, if
required, all personnel involved in the field operations will be
issued and will wear organic vapor monitors (3M Standard Model 3500
or equivalent). At the end of the workday, these will be collected,
_identified by the wearer, and submitted by the Site Safety Officer
for submittal to the laboratory for analysis. A new vapor monitor
will be issued to each field personnel at the start of each day's
work shift. Compounds selected for analysis of the film badges
will include benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene or three other
volatile organic solvents detected by the HNu meter or suspected of
being present.
During drilling and sampling operations for all borings, a portable
continuous, combustible gas analyzer will monitor the presence of
hydrocarbons. If during drilling and sampling, visable hydrocarbons
are detected or the combustible gas analyzer indicated 10% of the
Lower Explosive Level (LEL) work must stop and the hazard of
continuing the drilling will be assessed by the Site Safety Officer
and SPPL's safety representative.
Industrial first-aid kits will be onsite during all field operations.
