EXPOSURE CONTROLS
1. Potential chemicals of concern:
a. Gasoline-derived volatile organic compounds (VOC's), including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes,
MTBE, TAME, ETBE, DIPE, TBA, and 1, 2-DCA.
2. Potential hazards and exposure control measures:
a. Physical [Note: Level D PPE is a minimum requirement at all times. Fire extinguisher (20# ABC minimum),
first aid kit, and eye wash equipment to be set-up and available at all times. Post proper signage].
Noise: Wear hearing protection having sufficient noise reduction rating (NRR) when noise levels exceed
85 dBA. In suspect areas, perform noise monitoring using a sound level meter.
Hand tools: Wear eye protection. All electrical tools should utilize a GFCI or be double insulated; use
proper tool for the job; Lockout or tagout defective or damaged equipment or tools.
Pedestrian and vehicular traffic: Utilize delineators, barricades, caution tape, snow fencing, or temporary
chain-link fencing as necessary to divert traffic and pedestrians around work area; Personnel shall wear
reflectorized Class 2 safety vests.
Hand protection: Utilize appropriate gloves to protect hands when handling contaminated material, tools,
equipment, and other site materials.
Lock Out/Tag Out procedures to be followed where energy control is needed to perform the activity.
Spoils from excavations to be placed a minimum 2 feet from excavation edge.
Work at heights: Utilize ladders for work performed over head. Utilize properly rated ladders for the task.
Beware of moving parts on heavy equipment (pinch points, rotating parts). All personnel are to wear
high visibility clothing when heavy equipment is operating.
b. Inhalation
i. Dust: Wear dusk mask when cutting, drilling, or grinding, especially indoors. Wear dust masks if soil
becomes dry (to avoid fugitive dust and potential lead exposure); Suppress excess dust with dust control
techniques, monitor respirable dust concentration with dust monitor where necessary.
c. Ingestion:
Utilize appropriate glove material to keep hands free of dirt and chemicals of concern.
Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking, and before using restroom facilities.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke within the work area..
d. Dermal:
i. Use nitrile gloves (minimum) when handling fuels, solvents and cleaners.
Use nitrile gloves under leather gloves when handling wet concrete, sandbags, equipment.
Use double layer nitrile gloves, at a minimum, when handling soil to avoid potential skin exposure.
3. Permit-Required Activities (ex. energy isolation, hot work, ground disturbance, working at heights):
It is not anticipated that permit-required activities will be required during the execution of activities on this
project. If it is necessary to perform activities requiring a specific permit, the Site Responsible Person will
issue the appropriate permit(s) that will describe the permitted activity(s), the appropriate safety and
emergency equipment required, and the necessary environmental monitoring or controls. All personnel
involved in the permitted activity will be briefed on the hazards and control measures associated with the
activity and each person will authorize the permit. The Site Responsible Person, attesting that all permit
conditions have been met, will approve the permit. Upon completion of the activity, or expiration of the
permitted allotted time, the permit will be closed out by the Site Responsible Person.
BP Arco # HASP Created by: Scott Bittinger Revised by: Evan Lee Fau
Template Version: 02.02 Created on: 10/02/2017 Revision date:10/30/2017
