3.1.2 General Procedures during Excavations <br />Excavation, material handling, stockpiling, and backfilling will stop when wind speed exceeds 25 mph. During <br />excavation activities, the work areas, stockpiled material, and roadways will be watered down (if necessary) to <br />minimize dust. <br />Access and egress ramps shall be designed by a qualified soils engineer, and maintained in areas of excavation <br />or trenching greater than 4 feet in depth. The ramps will be positioned so that no more than 25 feet of lateral <br />travel is necessary to access them. The stability of adjacent structures must be determined prior to entering a <br />trench or excavation greater than 4 feet in depth. No employees shall be permitted to enter any excavation 4 or <br />more feet in depth unless all proper excavation safety procedures have been taken. <br />Workers shall not be permitted underneath loads handled by excavation or loading equipment. Barriers shall be <br />constructed to keep equipment and personnel away from the edge of the excavation. <br />3.2 Personal Protective Equipment <br />Work will be conducted utilizing level D PPE. PPE will be upgraded to level C when conditions outlined in <br />Table 1 have been met. <br />Level D PPE consists of: <br />Hard hat <br />Safety-toed shoes/ boots - or steel-toe covers <br />Safety glasses, goggles or prescription glasses with side shields <br />Coverall or other suitable work clothing <br />High visibility safety vest <br />Gloves as appropriate for task <br />Hearing protection when needed <br />Long pants & sleeves <br />Level C PPE consists of: <br />Half-face or full-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges <br />Chemically resistant clothing and gloves <br />Safety glasses, goggles or prescription glasses with side shields <br />Steel-toed safety boots <br />High visibility safety vest <br />Hearing protection <br />Hard hat <br />BP Arco # HASP Created by: Scott Bittinger Revised by: Evan Lee Fau <br />Template Version: 02.02 Created on: 10/02/2017 Revision date:10/30/2017
