Respirator cartridges should be replaced daily or more frequently if contaminant levels cause cartridge
saturation. Used cartridges shall be discarded to prevent accidental re-use. Respirator cartridges should be
matched to the contaminants of concern, normally requiring organic vapor (and/or organic vapor-acid gas) and
high-efficiency particulate cartridges (HEPA) for most sites.
Workers must be trained in respiratory protection and be fit-tested for the respirator prior to field work. Persons
with facial hair which interferes with use of a respirator will be restricted from the work zone, or asked to shave.
Spare cartridges should be kept on site, in sealed containers to prevent contamination from the ambient air.
Shelf lives of cartridges will be monitored and a cartridge change-out schedule will be developed for all tasks
requiring level C work.
Workers who must come in direct contact with VOC-contaminated soil for sampling purposes will be required
to wear protective gloves and/or necessary protective clothing to prevent skin contact.
3.3 Work Zones - Engineering Controls
Access to work areas will be limited by the Site Responsible Person to essential personnel. Work areas will be
cordoned off using orange or yellow delineators, barriers, and/or taping.
Barriers must be used to demarcate the work zone. Standard traffic cones are not generally adequate due to their
low vertical profile. The taller delineators should be used. Optionally, warning flags and barricade tape can be
used with the cones. In high traffic areas, safety pennants and plastic or steel "A" frame type barricades may be
used. In addition, the company vehicle can be used as a barricade to further prevent accidents from occurring.
All traffic control plans must be approved by the CSM and the City if work is performed within a public right-
of-way. No variations to an approved traffic plan are acceptable unless approved ahead of time.
Excavated soil will be stored in closed drums, roll-off bins, or piles covered at the end of the day with plastic
sheeting. Any hydrocarbon-impacted soil will be removed from the site at the earliest opportunity.
3.4 Flammable Atmospheres
In the event that CGI readings anywhere on the site exceed 10 percent of the LEL, work will be suspended,
monitoring will be continued as necessary to isolate the area of concern, and any or all of the following
environmental controls will be implemented as appropriate:
Vapors from pooled petroleum product will be suppressed (if necessary) by spraying with foam,
appropriate chemical suppressant, carbon dioxide in gas form, or dry ice.
Air movers will be used to ventilate the areas of concentration to below 10 percent LEL.
Borings emitting excessive VOC concentrations will be ventilated, capped, or shut in as necessary.
Contaminated soil will be covered with clean soil, or plastic sheeting, and/or sprayed with water or
deodorizing chemicals in order to reduce vaporization of VOC.
Drilling equipment will be bonded and grounded during the operation, and spark arrestors will be
installed on exhaust pipes to control ignition sources.
BP Arco # HASP Created by: Scott Bittinger Revised by: Evan Lee Fau
Template Version: 02.02 Created on: 10/02/2017 Revision date:10/30/2017
