Sierra Chemical Co.
Hazardous Waste Management Plan
• Label containers with the words "Universal Waste" and other descriptive words such as
"Universal waste — lamps," "Universal Waste — batteries," or "Universal Waste — mercury
containing devices;" or "Universal Waste —electronic devices" and
• Store waste for no more than 1 year from the date waste was first placed in the container.
4.2 EPA ID Number
Sierra Chemical Co. has notified the Cal/EPA and DTSC of its waste status by mail and/or email and also
by submitting Form 1358, California Hazardous Waste Permanent ID Number Application. The EPA ID
number for Sierra Chemical Co. is CAL000221604.
5. Waste identification, Characterization, and Analysis
5.1 Hazardous Waste
Sierra Chemical Co. has identified all known hazardous waste streams which are generated onsite. Table
2 identifies a general description of the waste and a list of the locations of the waste.
Table 2
General Hazardous Waste Description EPA Federal CA Waste Process Generating Waste
Waste Code Code
Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste- Oil N/A 223 Machine shop or maintenance shop
Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste- N/A 223 Machine shop or maintenance shop
Absorbents, oil
Hydrochloric acid spill clean-up wastes N/A 181 HCI spill clean-ups
Aerosol cans (full) D001, D035 343 Labeling containers
Sodium hydroxide spill clean-up N/A 181 Sodium hydroxide spill clean-ups
wastes
Sodium hypochlorite wastes D001, D035 343 Sodium hypochlorite spill clean ups
Waste oil and oily rags N/A 223 Equipment maintenance
If a new waste is generated at the facility, then a determination must be made as to whether the waste
is hazardous. Generator knowledge of the process generating the waste, any associated material Safety
Data Sheets (SDSs), and laboratory analysis by a CA certified laboratory are tools that can be used during
waste determination.
According to 40 CFR section 262.11 a solid waste is considered hazardous if:
1. The waste is a "Listed Waste" (P -list, U -list, F -list, and K -list) (40 CFR 261.30). By definition, the
EPA has determined that some specific wastes are hazardous.
2. The waste is a "Characteristic Waste" (40 CFR 261 subpart Q. Wastes that have not been
specifically listed may still be considered as a hazardous waste if it exhibits one of the four
characteristics of hazardous waste:
a.
