• Take the following measures to stop and/or contain the release: (Describe appropriate
measures, such as the following example.) (Reference specific SOP'S, i.e. Cl2 release)
Stop the container from leaking
Apply absorbent materials on spill
o If the spill is to sandy soil, shovel off the contaminated soil into a drum
o If the spill is to a storm drain, block off the drain before discharge to surface waters and
place in oil absorbent boom at the discharge to the lake.
• Notify the Emergency Coordinator
n The Emergency Coordinator will assess the possible hazards, both direct and indirect, to
human health or the environment,
o The Emergency Coordinator will immediately identify the character, exact source,
amount and area extent of the release. The initial identification methods will be to
utilize visual analysis of the material and location of the release. If for some reason the
release material cannot be identified, samples will be taken for chemical analysis.
Potential accidents fall under two general classifications; (1) fire and/or explosions, and (2) spills or
material releases. Natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes are assumed to fall into one
of these two classifications.
FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION
Describe access for firefighting in the areas affected by the fire or explosion.
o Hazardous work in all areas will be shut down immediately
o AR feed lines including power will be shut down as necessary and practical
o The Emergency Coordinator shall contact applicable agencies (see Table 2)
* The area will be cleared of all personnel not actively involved in fighting the fire. These
persons area to report to the designated rally points for accountability. Rally points are
designated on the general site plant in Attachment 1.
All injured persons will be removed, and medical treatment will be administered by qualified
personnel.
SPILL OR MATERIALS RELEASE
When contacted, the designated Emergency Coordinator will obtain information pertaining to the
following:
a. The material spilled or released
b. Location of the release or spillage of hazardous material
c. An estimate of the quantity released and the rate at which it is being released
d. The direction in which the spill or vapor or smoke release is heading
e. Any injuries involved
f. Fire and/or explosion or possibility of these events
g. The area and materiats involved and the intensity of the fire or explosion
