FOR REFERENCE ONLY BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL
Hazardous Materials Spill Response HAZ-006
Damaged, Not Leaking Hazmat Packages
16. Transfer leaking packages into a lined salvage drum immediately and always within 96 hours of
discovery.
17. Complete a Salvage Drum Label, OP-909.
Damaged, Not Leaking Hazmat Packages
If a damaged, but apparently not leaking Hazmat package (including Limited Quantity) is discovered
in any station/hub:
1. Stop operations.
2. Warn others in the area of the hazard.
3. Contact a manager immediately.
The manager has trained employees determine if the damaged, leaking package contains a
Hazmat by observing any markings or labels (e.g., hazard communication GHS pictograms,
limited quantity mark, lithium battery mark, DOT diamond label, OP-900LG, OP-900LL) on the
package.
At no time should an employee, trained or untrained, deliberately expose any part of his or her
body to unknown leaking materials in order to identify the nature of the leaking substance.
If someone is exposed to a chemical, section 4 of the SDS should have first aid information.
There may also be first aid information on the product label.
4. Complete the Hazardous Material Incident Report within the Hazmat Incident Reporting System
as a no-spill incident. Also, complete an ISF. Refer to the Damaged, Leaking Hazmat Packages
section for more information.
5. Wait for disposition from Safety, PGH.
Undamaged materials are containers and packaging that are considered to be reusable by the
shipper. Containers are considered undamaged if there is no product released from the
container or packaging. If only the outer packaging is damaged (e.g., the outer box is wet from
rain), the inner containers are considered undamaged.
6. Per the Hazmat disposition, RTS the undamaged material to the shipper in a lined, salvage
drum that contains the following:
• OP-90OLL
• OP-90OLG
• Applicable diamond labels/markings
• Address label/barcode from the original package
• OP-909
• Orientation arrows for liquids
Note: Local management should coordinate the retrieval of the lined salvage drum after the
undamaged materials are delivered. These are expensive and reusable as long as they are
not contaminated.
Last Update: 01 December 2020 Page 5 of 13
