FOR REFERENCE ONLY BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL
Hazardous Materials Spill Response HAZ-006
Reference Materials
Reference Materials
The following materials can be used to help determine the extent of and the appropriate response
to a Hazmat incident.
SDS
These are designed to help personnel understand how to work safely with any chemicals they
encounter in their work area. An SDS has 16 sections and covers topics such as hazardous
ingredients, physical hazard data, special protection information, health hazard data, precautionary
measures, spill or leak procedures, fire cautions, first aid, transportation regulatory status and/or
environmental concerns.
Note: If you cannot obtain the SDS from the shipper, contact the manufacturer for the
correct SDS. (Contact information is located on the inner container product label.) Verify that
the correct SDS for the damaged or leaking material is used. A small difference in the name
of chemical can change the hazards posed in a spill situation.
Important: The lack of DOT hazardous material markings or labels does not indicate that a
chemical is safe to handle in a leak situation. Always consult the SDS for spills of any
liquids, powders or gels before cleanup operations begin.
Spill Guides
Whenever the SDS is not immediately available, use the OP-890.
Order this booklet from the warehouse and keep it in the hazardous material supply cabinet in your
designed hazardous material processing area.
These spill guides include:
• Explosives
• Gases
• Class 3
• Solids
• Liquids
• Others
• Unlabeled/unknown
Last Update: 01 December 2020 Page 7 of 13
