FOR REFERENCE ONLY BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL
Hazardous Materials Spill Response HAZ-006
Obtaining Spill Response Information
Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)
The Emergency Response Guidebook provides general information about a spill based upon the
UN identification number and/or the proper shipping name. The information contained in the ERG
can provide initial basic hazard information about the material until you are able to obtain more
specific information such as an SDS sheet. The information in the DOT ERG may not be applicable
to all situations, as the ERG uses a broad analysis of all possible scenarios; therefore, do not use
only the ERG to determine how to respond to a Hazmat release. Also, use good judgment when
making decisions based on the information in the ERG.
2020
FftG£ NSE
y UC GUU£BOOK
Z
3
2
a
Obtaining Spill Response • •
1. Obtain an SDS from the shipper or the manufacturer.
2. The form explains the reason for the request and the next course of action that
can be taken if the request is not completed.
3. Proceed accordingly.
If the SDS is unobtainable from either the shipper or product manufacturer and/or does not
contain adequate spill response information:
a. If the package is a lithium battery or Limited Quantity O, contact the Safety department,
PGH for assistance. Otherwise, call the emergency number on the OP-90OLL or OP-9001-G,
and provide that person with the following:
• What was spilled (proper shipping name, hazard class, UN/NA identification number,
and packing group)
• Total quantity spilled
• The personal protection equipment (PPE) available at the location
Important: If the emergency contact is unavailable, contact the Safety department, PGH
before calling FXG Emergency Spill Response Service at 833.FXG.SPIL
(833.394.7745).
Last Update: 01 December 2020 Page 8 of 13
