GRILLI
PROFESSIONAL LAW CORPORATION
Re: Disposal of Rotary Drilling Mud;
Foothill Sanitary Landfill,
San Joaquin County
Your letter of March 25, 1983 was referred to me for re-
view and response.
I am informed that due to recent heavy rain storms the
Forward, Inc., disposal site was not accepting drilling mud
waste. During the week of March 7, 1983 representatives of
Foothill Sanitary Landfill, Inc., met with the Drilling Super-
intendent and Mud Engineer from Standard Oil Company of Cali-
fornia to discuss the temporary disposal of drilling fluids from
their Stockton well locations at the Foothill site. The Standard
Oil Company representatives indicated the mud waste consisted of
bentonite clay, rain water, make-up water from the Stockton City
water supply and minor additives approved by the California DOHS
as being non -hazardous.
Based upon this information, the wastes were transported to
the Foothill Sanitary Landfill, a Class II site in eastern San
Joaquin County, California. The waste material was placed in an
excavated pond in an area where.they would not contact the Group
2 wastes in the working landfill and where they can be contained
without co -mingling with surface run-off water. In this area of
the site, shallowest ground water exists approximately 600 feet
below ground surface.
Subsequently, California Water Labs of Modesto, California
obtained 3 samples of the drilling fluid for analysis with the
following results
