Mr. Dave Olmstead -2- February 2, 1982
I. Groundwater Movement
Have any piezometers been installed on the site to monitor
seasonal fluctuations in groundwater levels, and the gradient of the
water table (unconfined) across the project site? Has the extent of
the recharge/seepage effect produced from the earth-lined canal bor-
dering the property been investigated. What is the "anticipated
highest level of groundwater" within the project site, and how did
you assess this value? Are you aware that on April 8, 1981 the
groundwater conditions in the Santos Ranch Area were investigated by
the California Regional Water Quality Control Board and two San
Joaquin County Sanitarians, at which time groundwater was observed
in an open trench 6 feet below ground surface? Have you performed
any aquifer tests or drawdown tests on shallow (less than 120ft.)
wells in the area to determine the aquifer properties? Have you
evaluated any driller's logs from the area to determine the lateral
extent, orientation, and depth of any significant confining layers
(clay aquicludes) present in the subsurface?
II. Groundwater Quality
Have you examined any chemical and bacteriological test results
from wells in the immediate area? Is there a significant difference
in water quality between deep and shallow wells in the immediate area?
Have you prepared drawings illustrating a community well and water
distribution system. If available groundwater does not meet the ac-
ceptable (Calif. Dept. of Health Services, U.S.P.H.S.) chemical, phy-
sical and bacteriological standards for domestic water supply, would
you install an appropriate water treatment system? Have you examined
the loadings (lb./acre) of dissolved minerals, notably nitrates, that
would be added to the groundwater currently consumed by local resi-
dents. Do you anticipate a 10%, 20%, 50%, or 100% increase of nitrate
levels in domestic wells downgradient of your proposed development?
Are you aware of any other areas in California that currently have
groundwater contamination problems resulting from dense concentrations
of leachfields?
III. Sewage Disposal
Did any of the five eight foot deep soil profiles required inter-
cept the water table, and if so which profiles? On what dates were
these profiles examined? Were the profiles dug 8ft. below existing
or proposed grade? Did any of the 20 percolation test pits required
not maintain the required "stabilized" percolation of 60 minutes per
inch, and if so on which lots?
