Santos Ranch Resident
November 29, 1984
Page 3
7. Is current analysis of the water in the Santos Ranch
available?
ANSWER:
Other than those tests which we have for the community wells
being constructed, no other data is available. It is assumed
that the water quality of the private wells is similar to the
tests at the strata located 72-80 feet below the ground sur-
face, provided in the answer to Question No. 1.
B. Is a copy of the study made in the Chico area available?
ANSWER:
Lee Hall of the Health District contacted Chico and found
that this study was a grant application of an unsewered area
with documented health problem where several community water
systems exist. He did not obtain a copy, but has been "
promised the results of the study to be completed in January,
which will identify the origin of nitrate in the water.
9. It was stated that a moratorium on future development in the
- area should be imposed if unhealthy prolems exist in the
area.
ANSWER:
The only potential problem which has been identified is the
nitrates in the groundwater strata located 72-80 feet below
the ground surface. Presently, there are no State require-
ments for water quality in individual wells. Due to this,
further development should not be allowed in the area on pri-
vate well systems. This has been addressed by the formation
of County Service Area No. 35, which will operate a community
water system.
10. It was stated that you feel storm watei drainage in the sub-
divisions are causing water quality problems in your private
wells.
ANSWER:
The nitrate problems probably are occurring due to residual
fertilizers in the soils which occurred over years of agri-
cultural use. The nitrates have probably been in the ground-
water for many years prior to the Santos Ranch development
and even a terminal storm drain system would probably not
alleviate the nitrate problem.
