05110 Structural & Miscellaneous Metals
required. Burned or flame cut edges to be welded shall be chipped clean, and wire
brushed before welding. Clamp members as required, space and alternate welds, all as
may be necessary to prevent warping or misalignment.
2. Weld Metal: Weld metal shall be thoroughly fused with the base metal along all
surfaces and edges of the union. Penetration shall be 1/16-inch minimum and shall be
into the root of the joint.
3. Weld Quality: Shall present a uniform surface, free of imperfections, and without
undercutting or overlapping and free from excessive oxides, gas pockets, and non
metallic inclusions. Welds shall be made with the proper number of beads or passes
to secure sound, thoroughly fused joints. Provide backup bars, temporary backup
bars, or backup welds for all full penetration welds. All penetration welds to be full
penetration (U.N.O.). Each deposit shall not exceed AWS Standards for each pass or
bead. Preceding layers shall be by wire brushing or peening to remove scale and slag,
before placing any new weld metal.
4. Sequence Welding: When welds enclose, or partially enclose, the perimeter or portion
of the surface of a member, the weld bead shall be made in sequence or staggered, so
as to minimize internal stresses.
5. Faulty and Defective Welding: Any welding showing cracks, slag inclusion, lack of
fusion, bad undercut or other defects, ascertained by visual or other means of
inspection shall be repaired per AWS repair procedures and properly replaced at
Contractor's expense.
6. Minimum Weld Strengths: Details of fabrication not specifically shown shall follow
in type similar details which may be specifically shown and in all cases, shall at least
match the minimum weld sizes recommended by AISC. All bevel and groove welds
shall be full penetration unless size is noted otherwise.
E. All beams shall be cambered as indicated on the drawings. Beams without camber shall
be fabricated for installation with any "natural" crown up. Cantilever beams to be
fabricated with "crown" down.
F. Grinding: The following structural steel and connections shall be ground smooth:
1. Exposed cut ends of structural and fabricated shapes.
2. All welds exposed to view.
3. Mitered and fit-up corners and intersections.
G. Bolt Holes:
1. Bolt holes to be 1/16-inch oversize round or oversize 1/16-inch by 1/4-inch oversize
slotted when so noted on the Drawings.
2. Holes in base plates of anchor bolts may be 1/8-inch oversize.
3. Edge, end distances and spacing shall conform to those shown on the Drawings.
3.03 PAINTING AND GALVANIZING
A. After inspection and approval of structural steel by Owner's Testing Laboratory, steel
materials are to be primed with one (1) shop coat of paint when materials are to be
exposed to view and finish painted. Steel materials including bolts and washers are to be
Hot Dip galvanized when exposed to weather and not finish painted or as noted on the
Micke Grove Zoo Wash Water and Septic Disposal System 05110-4
Siegfried Engineering, Inc.
MESA Project LOCA 0701
