**Local conditions will determine depth of seal. Seal to <br /> 50 feet if 50 feet or less from a domestic well or from <br /> sources of contamination such as septic tanks , sewage <br /> disposal fields , livestock corrals , etc . All sealing shall <br /> be permanent. <br /> b. Sealing Material <br /> 1. Neat Cement - 1 bag (94 lbs . ) Portland Cement to 5 to 10 <br /> gallons of clean water. <br /> 2. Cement Grout - Not more than two (2 ) parts by weight of sand <br /> and one (1) part of cement (per bag of cement ) to 5 to 7 <br /> gallons of clean water. <br /> 3. Quick setting cemen't, retardants to setting and other <br /> additives , including; hydrated lime , up to 10% of the <br /> volume of cement and bentonite up to 5% may be used. <br /> 4. Bentonite clay may be used as sealing material. <br /> C. In grouting the annular space, the grout shall be applied in <br /> one continuous process , to the initial set when less than 100 <br /> sacks are required. The annular seal shall have a nominal <br /> thickness of two (2 ) inches . <br /> 2. SEALING OFF STRATA <br /> • a. Aquifers penetrated that contain poor quality water shall be <br /> sealed to prevent contamination. These methods shall be <br /> reviewed by the District Health Officer. Sealing shall be <br /> done by one of the three methods approved by the Health <br /> Department. <br /> 3. SURFACE SEAL <br /> a. A monolithically poured concrete platform shall be constructed <br /> around the top of the well on thoroughly compacted earth , <br /> whether the pump is mounted over the well , offset, or is a <br /> submersible type. <br /> b. On new wells the casing; shall extend a minimum of twelve (12 ) <br /> inches above the ground surface or floor. . Upon completion of <br /> drilling or until the pump is installeU , a seal or cover shall <br /> be provided on top of the casing. <br /> 4. SANITARY SEAL: <br /> a. ?^Then the pump is mounted directly over the casing, a grout <br /> or mastic seal shall be provided to make a water tight ,point <br /> between the pump and the base. <br /> b. All holes in the base of the pump which open directly into <br /> the well shall be sealed. If the pump is offset or submersible <br /> a sanitary seal shall be provided between the pipe .column or <br /> or other pipes or cables and the casing. <br /> c. The seal shall be shaped to prevent retention of water or <br /> other foreign materials. <br /> (41) <br />
