Traffic Hazards
Vehicular traffic is of concern to field personnel when conducting work in the street or
other traffic corridors. Appropriate control measures for safely conducting work in the
street and/or directing traffic around the work area include one or more of the following:
• Use of high visibility safety vests or other high visibility clothing for all personnel
performing work in the street
• Proper placement of appropriately labeled signs indicating the presence of roadwork
and changes to normal traffic pathways.
• Placement of safety cones or flashers in and approaching the work area to safely
divert traffic around the work area.
Heat Stress
Adverse climates conditions, primarily heat, are important considerations in planning and
conducting site operations. Heat stress is an associated concern. Preventative measures
include the following:
Frequent rest periods in the shade when heat and/or humidity are high
g
• Provide water and/or commercial electrolyte solutions. Drinking of these
fluids will be encouraged but should be consumed away from drilling
equipment and sampling areas.
• Personnel exhibiting symptoms of heat stress (e.g., nausea, headache,
cramps, dizziness, clammy skin) will be removed from the work area, will be
cooled, will be administered fluids and will be observed.
• Personnel exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke (e.g., hot dry skin, mental
confusion, unconsciousness) will be immediately cooled and taken to the
hospital.
3.3 BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS
Poison oak in the area may cause skin irritation in some people. Poison oak soap will
provided for use after work hours. All clothing should be washed to avoid
recontamination.
