3.4 POTENTIAL CHEMICAL HAZARDS
Chemicals of Concern
The primary modes of possible exposure of site personnel to hazardous chemicals during
this project are through skin contact with contaminated soil and through inhalation of
airborne vapors containing chemicals of concern. Ingestion of contaminated soil is
another potential mode of exposure. Field personnel will minimize potential chemical
hazards by avoiding direct contact with groundwater, soil and by use of protective
equipment as discussed below.
3.5 EXPOSURE MINIMIZATION
Field personnel will minimize potential exposure to chemical hazards by avoiding direct
contact with groundwater, surface water and soil through the use of protective equipment.
Safe work practices, including restriction of eating, drinking or smoking in the sampling
areas will also be enforced at the worksite to minimize potential contact and ingestion of
soil.. Workers will thoroughly wash after removal of their personnel protective
equipment. Respiratory protective measures are discussed below.
3.6 PROTECTIVE ACTIONS
Personal Protective Equipment
I
Clear Heart Drilling field personnel will wear equipment to protect against the potential
physical and chemical hazards, which may have been identified herein and those that
become apparent in the field. Level D protection will be required at a minimum for field
activities at the site. Level D personal protective equipment to be used will include:
• Hard hat
• Coveralls (cloth or Tyvek)
• Chemical resistant disposable gloves
• Boots, steel toe, and/or rubber, steel toe
• Safety glasses and earplugs
The level of protection employed for general site activities by Clear Heart Drilling
personnel may be upgraded, as deemed necessary by the Site Safety Officer. If dust
generation occurs or vapors are encountered, the Site Safety Officer may require
modified Level C protection, i.e., donning of respirator and use of Tyvek coveralls.
Modified Level C protection includes:
• Respiratory protection consisting of a half -mask air purifying respirator wi
organic vapor or combined organic vapor/HEPA filter cartridges
