Flies will generally stay within the immediate vicinity of their breeding site but can migrate between 'A
mile and 2 miles. Sometimes further in special circumstances. This fact points to elimination of food and
breeding materials as the single most powerful weapon In controlling fly populations.
Problem Solving Methods Available:
Of the methods available for controlling flies and managing manure, the following are most appropriate
to the situations present at the Grimaud Farms facilities:
Removal and proper disposal of all manure that can be accessed by adult flies within a time
frame that is shorter than the normal life cycle of the fly.
Preventing adult files from accessing manure that is newly deposited or collected within
enclosed barns or confined storage areas.
Preventing adult flies from accessing other food/breeding material that may be temporarily
stored on site such as dead animals or garbage.
Spraying any of a number of chemicals designed to kill flies and/or larvae In and around areas of
attraction.
Routine cleaning of areas of attraction, such as manure handling equipment, trucks, garbage
cans, storage bins, floors, etc.
Specific Program:
Recognizing that weather conditions, equipment failures and other circumstances beyond reasonable
control will occasionally prevent certain elements of this program from being performed exactly as
written. Employees should take whatever measures they can to consistently accomplish the INTENT of
the program.
The manure management program differs for some barns as a result of either special regulations
affecting the animals in that barn or the cleaning equipment that is installed.
Manure Removal from Barns:
Barns are set up for quarterly removal of manure and cleaning. When the manure is removed from
these barns it will be deposited in a truck or other hauling equipment as soon as possible, but no longer
than 7 days after removal from each respective barn, and carried from the site for proper disposal.
Persons and/or companies receiving the manure are expected to know about and follow regulations
regarding proper transport and disposal of the manure. Any residual manure on site is to be cleaned up
within a 7 day window of removal from the barn. Affected areas are to be cleaned, plowed, graded,
dried, or sprayed with Insecticides (or all of the above) as appropriate to prevent fly breeding.
All personnel using insecticides must be familiar with the material safety data sheets and Instructions
regarding the safe handling and use of the products.
General Prevention Techniques:
Some quantity of manure will be present in the barns at all times. To prevent fly breeding in the manure
the doors must remain closed at all times except for the Ingress and egress of company personnel.
